Recent development: In June of this year, HLI issued demand letters to the farmwokers to stop the cultivation of the hacienda. The farmworkers were give deadline until October 30, 2009. However, the farmworkers defied the demand and the deadline.

Mayon Volcano erupts

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines— The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded an ash explosion in Mayon Volcano early Wednesday, which caused ash fall in Albay towns located southwest and northwest of the volcano.

"The explosion, which occurred at around 1:58 a.m., is a clear sign of magma intrusion toward the summit crater of the volcano," said Alex Baloloy, Phivolcs science research analyst.

Militant group spokesman shot dead in Bicol

A spokesman of a militant group was shot dead in Camarines Sur province in Bicol, a radio report said Wednesday.

Radio dzXL said Bayan Muna spokesman Rodrigo de Torres was on his way home in Del Gallego town when at least seven unidentified armed men opened fire on him.

Army nabs 4 alleged NPA members in Sorsogon

MANILA - Four suspected members of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) were captured in a military operation Saturday in Sorsogon province.

Lt. Col. Lito Sobejana, Army’s 3rd Scout Ranger Battalion commander, identified the alleged rebels as Beato Latosa, 35-year-old Amadeo Grayda of Juban town in Sorsogon, 38-year-old Nilo Escullar of Barcelona town and 18-year-old Ernesto Labadia of Bulan town.

Latosa is allegedly the assistant leader of Platoon Number 1 of the NPA and which allegedly operates in Magallanes town

Satur Ocampo urges repeal of Oil Deregulation Law of 1998

"It's apt for the House is to focus on measures to curb the abuses of the oil companies and to impose some regulation on the industry. For the sake of consumers, we hope that House Bills 3029 and 3030 that aim to replace the Oil Deregulation Law (RA. 8479) are fast-tracked into law to give government the legal teeth to put some order in the oil industry for the same of consumers," Ocampo said.

Ocampo is among the main authors of the said bills that are major sources in the pending bill titled "An Act amending Republic Act No. 8479, otherwise known as the 'Downstream Oil Industry Deregulation Act.'"
